Short video produced for Fusion Media Network duringthe 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Coletivo Papo Reto is an alternative media group made up of young
residents of Complexo do Alemão and Penha. Its eight members are
on-call 24/7 to produce media about human rights abuses, launch
campaigns on issues affecting favela residents, and document the positive
cultural events in Alemão. The group was formed in 2014 after a resident
was killed point blank by the police. Originally the goal was to dispel
the common stereotype of the favela resident as the “violent trafficker”
in mainstream media, but they now focus on denouncing police violence.
Two members of the collective describe the importance of what they do,
despite personal sacrifices in their own safety while working in
one of the most violent favelas in Rio de Janeiro.
