While California leads in the largest Arab population in the U.S., the Detroit Metropolitan Areacomes in a close second. Dearborn, specifically, is home to the highest concentration of
Arabs outside of the Middle East. To this day, the Arab population does not have a separate
category in the census, and Arabs are required to categorize themselves as “white,” or “other.”
In preparation of the election, Bayan, a young Arab-American woman pushes to get
the community out to vote. As a young 21-year-old activist, Bayan thinks that
the Arab-American vote is critical to help change the divisive and racist rhetoric
that has developed since 9/11, but has been exacerbated since the start of the elections.
